IGH and GH Words (night, though, laugh)
gh is the strangest letter pair in English, and it does three different things. In igh it is silent and the i says its name — night. After other vowels it is silent too — though, caught. And in a handful of words it says /f/ — enough, laugh.

Teaching tip
Teach igh first as one unbreakable chunk, then the silent-gh words, and treat the /f/ group (enough, laugh, cough, rough, tough) as a small list to learn by sight. There is no rule that predicts which you are looking at.
