R-Controlled Vowel Words (ar, er, ir, or, ur)
When r follows a vowel it bullies it: the vowel says neither its short nor its long sound. ar in car, or in fork, and er, ir and ur which all land on the same /er/ sound.

Teaching tip
The tricky part is not reading these — it is spelling them, because er, ir and ur sound identical. That has to be learned word by word, not by rule.
