Words Where Y Is a Vowel
y is a consonant at the start of a word (yes, yellow) but a vowel elsewhere. At the end of a short word it usually says /ī/ as in fly; at the end of a longer one it says /ē/ as in happy.

Teaching tip
Count the syllables. One syllable and y usually says its long-i sound; two or more and it drops to /ē/. That covers the large majority of cases.
