-ED Has Three Sounds — /t/, /d/ and /id/
Children write -ed correctly long before they hear that it has three pronunciations. Saying them aloud is what makes it click.
There is no rule here
After quiet sounds ED whispers /t/… after noisy sounds /d/… after t and d it sings /id/!
The past-tense ed has three voices!
• After quiet sounds like p, k, s → it whispers /t/ (jump-t, walk-t).
• After noisy (voiced) sounds → it says /d/ (play-d, clean-d).
• Right after t or d → it needs an extra beat /id/ (plant-id, need-id).
