GE or DGE? The Rule, With Word Lists
Bridge and large end with the same sound. As with ch and tch, the vowel before it makes the decision.
The rule
Right after a short vowel → DGE! After anything else → GE.
Both spell the /j/ sound at the end of a word.
• Right after a short vowel → add a silent d: dge (bri-dge, ba-dge).
• After a long vowel or another sound → plain ge is enough (cage, page).
