The soft-g rule looks like the soft-c rule but is far less reliable. Get, give and girl all break it, so teach those from the start.

Just like c, the letter g has two voices.
• Before a, o, u → hard (goat, game, gum).
• Before e, i or y → usually soft into /j/ (gem, giraffe, gym).
